When you receive the mourning postcard, why don't you give an incense stick to the gift of mourning sympathy as an offering when you hear the obituary?

"I want to convey my feelings of regret, but I hesitate to send the incense now."
"It's a pity that the relationship will disappear as it is, but what should I do?"
In such a case, why don't you give an incense stick to the scent as a "mourning visit"?

Q What is a mourning visit?

A Sending letters and goods to convey condolences to the other party during the mourning period.

Q When and what should I give?

A If you receive a postcard during mourning, send it as soon as possible to convey your feelings.
However, it is not necessarily within the year, and it is not rude to send it as a sympathy during the cold after the new year has settled down. There are no rules about what to give, but there are many incense sticks and flowers.

Q What if the other religion is another religion such as Shinto or Christianity?

A Depending on your religion, incense sticks may not be used. At that time, why not choose something that does not affect your religion, such as flowers and sweets.

Q I received an incense stick for my mourning, what should I do in return?

A Generally, it is not necessary to give back incense sticks or flowers when you receive them during mourning.
We encourage you to say thank you by phone or letter.

About Obon and Hatsubon
<About Obon>
The image of summer vacation is Obon. During the Obon holidays, I go home and visit graves. There are many fun events, but it is an important time to welcome your ancestors to your home and make a memorial service.
There are many things derived from Obon in our daily lives.
Obon may be so important for Japanese people.
I will explain the basic knowledge of Obon.
Depending on the area, it will be separated in July and August.

<What is Obon? >
Obon is a memorial service for ancestors and is officially called "Urabon".
At an important time when the spirits of our ancestors return to the world, we invite the spirits of our ancestors to make a memorial service.

<The story behind the birth of the new and old trays>
There are two types of Obon, the "new bon" in July and the "old bon" in August. I changed from the lunar calendar to the solar calendar, just like in the West.

Since December 3rd of Meiji 5 suddenly became January 1st of Meiji 6th, there was a lot of confusion at that time. At that time, the Obon festival was also in July.
According to the lunar calendar, the Obon festival, which was in the off-farm season, overlaps with a very busy time if it is one month earlier. Has reached.

<About the beginning of Obon>
There are various theories about the beginning of Obon, but in Buddhism, there is the following narrative of the mother of Maudgalyayana.

A long time ago, when Maudgalyayana, a disciple of Shaka-sama, used his magical power to ask, "What's wrong with your mother?", She fell into hell and suffered from hunger and thirst.
Even if the surprised Maudgalyayana waters her to help her, it dries quickly before it enters her mouth and cannot be drunk.

When I consulted with Mr. Shaka, he told me that he was suffering from hell because of his mother's bad deeds during his lifetime.

After that, according to the teachings of Buddha, a large number of monks were invited to offer food and drinks for a memorial service, and the mother who fell into hell was able to go to paradise. Since then, this day has become an important day to thank parents and ancestors.

By the way, during the Obon festival, temples often perform "Segaki".

Segaki is a memorial service for the dead (hunger) who have fallen into the hell of hunger and are suffering from hunger and thirst.
It is not decided that "it must be done on this day", but it seems that it is generally done as a memorial service to ancestors at the time of Obon.

<How to pick up Obon>
It's quite difficult nowadays, but it looks like this.

〇 Decorate the spirit shelf.
〇 In the evening of the 12th or in the morning of the 13th. We will offer decorations and offerings to spirit shelves and Buddhist altars.
〇 I will ignite a mukaebi.
〇 The evening of the 13th. Light the tray light.
〇 At the entrance or entrance of the house, hemp stalks called Ogara are folded and piled up on the roasted unglazed roast, and then lit and burned. This is called mukaebi. We will welcome your ancestors to return home on the smoke.
〇Burning a okuribi.
〇 16th or 15th. I will send you the spirits that have arrived at your house.
〇 At the same place where the mukaebi was lit, on the 16th (or 15th), repeat the Ogara and ignite the fire. This is called okuribi.

<Cucumber horse, eggplant cow and lantern of demon lantern (hozuki)>
I used to see it a lot.
Cucumbers and eggplants to be displayed on the tray.
Cucumbers represent horses and eggplants represent cows, with legs attached with disposable chopsticks.
They are called spirit horses and spirit cows, respectively.

Our ancestors have the feelings of "Please come early on a horse" and "Please ride a cow and return slowly".
There is also a theory that ancestors ride horses and cows carry luggage.

It is said that the demon lanterns are decorated to illuminate your feet like lanterns when your ancestors return, or to represent a bonfire or okuribi.

On July 9th and 10th, the Hozuki market will be set up at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, but if you visit Asakusa Kannon on that day, you will get the same benefits as if you visited 46,000 days.

<How to meet the new tray>

The first Obon festival is an important event for the deceased who became a Buddha to "go home for the first time after his death."
Sometimes it is called "Hatsubon", and sometimes it is written as "New Bon" and is called "Niibon" or "Arabon".

A white lantern with no pattern dedicated to Hatsubon is displayed, and monks and close relatives are invited to run the Hatsubon memorial service. However, if the Bon Festival arrives 49 days before, the first Bon Festival is generally the following year.

You may also be given lanterns, incense, and offerings, but you do not need to give them back.

<What if you are invited to the Obon festival? >

Bring an incense to the Obon festival.
The writing of the incense is "Buddhist altar" or "offering fee".
About 5,000 to 10,000 yen. It is said that the amount is about the same as the funeral incense.
In addition, there are recent housing conditions, so it is a good idea to check in advance when giving a lantern.

<Comparing Obon and Higan? >

It is a simple comparison table because it is difficult to understand the equinoctial week in addition to the Obon festival for important Buddhist events that are closely related to daily life.

〇Meaning Obon: Period for thinking about ancestors Higan: Period for ancestors to return A period for spending time as a Buddhist and thinking about feelings

〇Number of times Obon: Once a year (summer)
Higan: Twice a year (spring / autumn)

〇Time Obon: July 13th to 16th (August depending on the area)
Spring equinox: 3 days before and after the vernal equinox day Autumn equinox: 3 days before and after the autumn equinox day

〇What to do <Obon>
Decorate the spirit shelf Fire bonfires and okuribi Segakikai / Banranbonkai Visiting the grave <Higan>
Cleaning Buddhist altars and Buddhist altars Visiting the grave of the equinoctial week

<Summer tradition is also derived from Obon>
There are actually many things that come from Obon, which I often hear.
Some of them are called "bon" like Bon Odori, while others are not so easy to connect.

■ Midsummer Festival It is said that the first public Bon festival event was held in Japan during the time of Emperor Suiko, and then during the time of Emperor Shomu, it was held as a Miyanaka event.
In the Edo period, it became a popular event for the common people.
Around this time, I started to visit the houses of relatives and acquaintances and give gifts, which is called "Bonrei".
It is said that this is connected to the current "midyear gift".

■ Bon Odori The beginning of Bon Odori is said to have been associated with the Obon festival during the Heian period, when Kuya's superior dance memorial Buddha was associated with the event. In addition, there are various theories that the rituals of worship that have been handed down in each region since ancient times were linked to the bonsai bon.
In front of the house welcoming the new bon, a person who hides his face with a cheek bite dances as a deceased person, which means a dance to memorialize the dead.
It is also said that there are some areas where Bon Odori shelves are displayed on top of the Bon Odori Yagura.

■ "Capital ware" and "spirit flow"
Kyoto's "Capital Yaki", which is crowded with tourists, and "Seirei Nagashi" from all over Kitakyushu are also Obon festivals.
It is a kind of okuribi.
It seems that the summer tradition, the fireworks, was born from the event of sending spirits.

■ Bon New Year It is a festival to liven up the event at the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival.
Bon New Year is a festival that celebrates the birth of the Maeda clan and promotion to the official position, and the townspeople at that time distributed a numbering table (pamphlet) to the castle.
At the Hyakumangoku Matsuri, children's lion dances, lion dances, drums, yosakoi, folk songs, etc. will appear in order to reproduce the "Bon New Year", and it is an event that wraps the inside of Kanazawa Castle Park with the heat of the feudal era.

<Visit to the new bon, a little more about the new bon and the first bon>

<What is the new tray of Obon? >
An important tray that will be greeted for the first time after the death of the deceased on the 49th. Since ancient times, the memorial service of "Shinbon" has been carried out especially generously, and those who are closely related to the deceased and the bereaved family have presented lanterns and incense sticks as "New Bon sympathy" to express their feelings of memorial service.

<What should I send to visit the new Bon festival in Obon?>
It is common to have long-lasting sweets, flowers, and incense sticks, and if you visit your home, it is a good etiquette to bring the incense sticks with you.
The market price of the incense is different depending on the relationship with the deceased in life, but in the case of an invited close person, other than close relatives ... 3,000 yen to 5,000 yen, close relatives ... 10,000 yen to 20,000 yen is the average.
* If possible, it is recommended to consult with close relatives and acquaintances who will attend the Shinbon visit.

<Table of Obon's New Bon Festival>
When wrapping the incense, the writing on the bag and envelope is "Buddhist altar"
・ When offering an item, the writing on the noshi paper is generally "together" or "new bon sympathy".

<Recommended Bon Festival time when mailing a new Bon Festival>
It is recommended to give it 2-3 days before the 13th, which is the time when the tray is in.
The period of Obon varies depending on the region and is generally divided as follows.

July 13-16 ... Tokyo, Yokohama, Shizuoka, etc.
August 13-16 ... Other areas

However, in Okinawa, events such as Obon are held in the lunar calendar, so be careful as the dates are different every year!

<Summary of Obon>
The method of welcoming Obon varies depending on the sect, and while it is a Buddhist event, it also has the customs of each region.

About the equinoctial week
Have you ever heard the words that the heat and cold are up to the equinoctial week? The equinoctial week makes us feel the arrival of a calm and comfortable season for Japan, which has four seasons. You can feel the change of clothes and the changing seasons.

<Higan period>
The spring equinox is three days before and after "Vernal Equinox Day" as the middle day. This total of 7 days is considered to be the period of "Higan".
Since the spring equinox day of this year (2021) is March 20 (Sat / holiday), the equinox of the spring of 2021 (Reiwa 3) is from March 17 (Wednesday) to March 23 (Tuesday). The schedule will be 7 days.

2021 (Reiwa 3rd year) Spring equinoctial week
March 17 (Wednesday) Entering the equinoctial week
March 20 (Sat / holiday) Chunichi (Spring Day)
March 23 (Tuesday) Higan dawn

2021 (Reiwa 3rd year) Autumn equinoctial week
September 20 (Monday / holiday) Entering the equinoctial week
September 23 (Thursday / holiday) Chunichi (Autumn Equinox Day)
September 26 (Sun) Higan dawn

Autumnal Equinox Day is a day to honor our ancestors and to honor those who have died.

The autumn equinox is a week before and after the autumnal equinox day.
In Buddhism, "Western Jodo is considered to have paradise in the west.
Therefore, on "Autumn Equinox Day" when the sun sets to the west, we will honor our ancestors in the Sukhavati Jodo and hold a memorial service.

<Buddhist middle school period>
On the spring and autumn equinox days, the sun emerges from the east and sets to the west.
It is a time of the middle way (balanced state) where the length of day and night is the same, so Buddhism who respects the middle way preaches Buddhism that stipulates that Buddhist practice Rokubarami should be carried out during this period. It's also a week.

<Etymology of equinoctial week>
"Higan" is derived from the Sanskrit word "parramita".
Parlor means "the other side" and Meeter means "cross".
In other words, "higan" refers to the world of enlightenment. On the other hand, the lost world in which we live is called "Konogishi".

In Buddhism, it is thought that there is paradise in the west, which is called Western Jodo.
The memorial service for our ancestors during the spring and autumn equinoxes will be the best time for us to go to the equinoctial week.
If you have a deep memorial service, you can say the same thing as going to the equinoctial week.
The equinoctial week is a custom unique to Japan, and the Buddhist altars are cleaned and offered to the ancestors before entering the equinoctial week.

<Information about equinoctial week and Rokuharamitsuji>

"Rokuharamitsuji" is backed by a spirit of gratitude and gratitude for everything.
It is from this spirit that I visit the graves of my parents and ancestors who have taken care of me on the equinoctial week.

1. Fuse (giving)
2. Precepts (keeping discipline)
3. Humiliation (having a good and correct heart)
4. Dedicated (work tirelessly toward the purpose)
5. Zen meditation (keeping a calm heart at all times)
6. Wisdom (to polish wisdom and use wisdom).

Do the above, pledge to reflect on the equinoctial week of enlightenment, and pray for the souls of your ancestors.
